Indoor Cycling

Types of bike trainers

• Wheel-on trainer: Compact, affordable, space saving, easily mounted onto nearly any bike
• Direct-drive trainer: Mechanism attaches directly to bike’s drivetrain, mimics a roadlike feel, good resistance control, most have app connectivity
• Bike simulator: Standalone exercise bike, comfortable and stable riding platform, does not require using your outdoor bike

App compatibility

• “Smart trainers” can provide fitness feedback like speed, cadence, power output, heart-rate data and more
• Check if the trainer supports your favorite subscription-based apps

Other things to consider

• Bike fit: Double-check trainer and bike specs
• Price: Least expensive options are typically wheel-on and “not smart”
• Additional parts: Some direct-drive trainers require a compatible rear cassette
• Accessories: Sweat mats, headwind and climbing simulators, and trainer platforms can add to the workout experience
